I had top surgery (double-incision) with Dr. Melissa Johnson in Springfield, MA in June of 2015 when I was 22. As part of my preparation for what is a fairly intense surgery and recovery process, I did a lot of research. There were very few comprehensive guides that were written up alongside personal experience. And so it was important to me to document not only the information I found, but to create a document that could be shared with other trans folks and their communities as they are preparing for top surgery.
This document reflects my personal research and experience, and is written with the strong disclaimer that I am not a medical professional, all of our bodies are different, and react differently to surgery and the emotional and physical aftermath. You should always be in communication with your surgical and medical team with any questions or concerns. This document is written with so much love for you, and for the ways you choose (or don’t choose) to pursue medical aspects of transition.
